Home of the proposed
The Brooklyn Observatory project seeks to establish a free and public astronomical observatory and science classroom in Prospect Park for New York’s residents, students and visitors. The observatory would be equipped and staffed for the teaching of astronomy and related STEM classes to visiting K-12 students in daytimes, and to offer accessible adult lectures in evenings.
As a perfectly-suited and permanent home for these educational activities, the observatory would serve as a tourist attraction for the park and borough, and would work hand-in-hand with nearby facilities such as the Brooklyn Museum, the Grand Army Public Library, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, the Prospect Park Zoo and with other local institutions.
Ideal, unobtrusive locations for the observatory have been identified, draft renderings of the facility are prepared, and operational plans are presently under development, making the Brooklyn Observatory project ready for realization. Management of the observatory would be overseen by a Board of Trustees, including representatives from the Parks Department, Education Department, Prospect Park Alliance and/or local community boards.
